Speak Wisely
Speak wisely.
1 My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.2 For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. 3 Indeed, [a]we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. 4 Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea,is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. 8 But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we cursemen, who have been made in the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, the sething sought not to be so. 11 Does a spring send forth freshwater and bitter from the same opening? 12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both saltwater and fresh. -James3 (NKJV)
A few weeks ago, I had a misunderstanding with an aunt. She came to our house and as I came to
greet her, she was hostile. She shouted at me saying that I hadn’t asked of her and I should go away. I attempted a conversation with her to pacify her but instead she screamed and almost pushed me. In my anger, I got up and said, “I no fit beg anybody”. At that very moment, another
“aunt” entered and apparently all she said was that statement I made. She held onto that, getting really upset over it and needless to say, my evening (and the weeks after with those women was totally ruined. The point was not whether I was right or not. I have learnt over the years that people cannot hold onto what they feel or sense as much as what they hear. If I hadn’t made that last statement and simply walked away, I would be telling a different story about that night. I guess that it was another reminder of how I need to watch what I say. Another problem I have is people using curse words, some people even use these words without knowing that they are curse words. You might think that there’s really no big deal in that but remember james 10-11 says, Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these thing sought not to be so. Does a spring send forth freshwater ãήϑ bitter from the same opening? Hopefully we all benefit from this thought and from my mistake.
I love you all,
Tope.
